Moving through the Holidays

Mon Dec 1, 2008, 8:52 AM
Right now things are a little slow... alot of the models in my area are booking shoots with all the newbie photographers who shoot that "Dave Hill" style stuff. You know, where you make the high pass layer with vivid color and make everyone's skin look like sandpaper right before you saturate the hell out of your picture and make them look sorta like cartoon characters with bad skin. ;)

Probably the most hideous trend I have seen in photography since the days where diffused glow was everywhere you looked.

These things come and go so I am just enjoying the slow time and working on ideas.

You're so right, Jeff.

That stuff's awful.
About 30 to 35 years ago that look was exactly what you got from really cheap 4c-Printing oneven worse paper (I got a whole, colored encyclopedia from those days to prove it).

Whole generations of developers worked hard to better the reproduction-techniques - and now some second-rated photographer recreates that same look with some really cheap photoshop tricks (that I would have been tempted to beat my students senseless for using those) is all the hype.
Beats me. Some people just really got no taste.

Yea I can't wait for this trend to be over... it's just crap.

Second rate?

Dave Hill is fourth-rate. He makes low-quality velvet paintings.

It drives me nuts when any photographer pulls photoshop tricks to the point where they change what the model looks like. I could photoshop my portraits until I looked 20 years old again but then it wouldn't be a picture of me anymore. There isn't a model over the age of 18 who doesn't have wrinkles and such and when I see an image of a model without nary a wrinkle, mole, freckle, or blemish it loses any impact because I'm no longer looking at a real person. Bleh.

Not a knock on Dave Hill himself... his style is his style. But making a really bad copy of it is another thing altogether.
