Goodbye Canon...

Fri Jun 27, 2008, 8:48 PM
WARNING: Camera Geek Stuff

After 20 years of being a faithful Canon customer, from the film camera days up through the this current digital age I am done.

On Thursday my EOS 30D died exactly 1 year and 2 months after I bought it, it lasted about the same amount of time that my 20D did, and the 10D before that. It kind of sucks to have to keep replacing camera's every single year because they are so poorly made. My plan was to make a camera last two years or 3 years so I could climb up to a really nice camera.

Now I have to replace again, and I am so hopping mad that I think it is time for a change.

What sucks is that I have ooodles of Canon Glass, including a killer L series lense... and I hate to downgrade from an L Series to a to the Nikon 18-200 VR lense but right now that Nikon D300 is looking very sexy too me. Coupled with the fact that I know it probably won't bust in exactly 13 months... well, it may be time to switch sides.

Man, that just sucks. I agree, I hate it when I have some accessories to go with something expensive (which ofcourse costs money too) and then the thing breaks too quickly.

I wish you luck with the Nikon!

Have had my MKIIs for about 4 years. One has even been hit by a foul ball (my head still hurts thinking of that day) but they are still going strong!

Sorry to hear youve had such a bad run, Ive owned a series of Canons (10D, 20D, 30D, 5D, 1DS MKII) and never had an issue
What's the shutter count on your 30D? Time seems to matter less with those than how much you've used it.

Send me a note with your L inventory. I'm looking for some primes.

i'm a nikon user and haven't ever used canon, but i've never heard of the issues you describe with any of the major brands. it's really too bad that you've had such a string of misfortune, but i wish you luck in your decision.

Shutter count on the 30D is right around 10,000 --- the 20D went out at about 15,000 it's not the shutter itself it's gears in the shutter assembly that are bad, you can't really replace those gears without replacing the entire assembly.

My zoom is the only L series. My primes are the 50mm macro 2.5 and the 85mm 1.8 they were always so effective I never saw the need to go to L glass there.

Very lucky, part of the mirror assembly has a plastic screw that is notorious for busting, it's why I was loathe to grab a 5d.
